Do you love Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Do you love Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters? Well, here are some book recommendations based on some of the best Buffy characters!
Starting with Buffy Summers herself!
If you love Buffy then I’m assuming you love upbeat characters that find themselves thrown into unusual situations and I think you should read Mina and the Undead by Amy McCaw.
Mina and the Undead is about Mina who travels to New Orleans to visit her sister for the summer. She’s super excited to explore the cities dark secrets and even manages to get a summer job at a horror move mansion but things take a turn for the worse when she stumbles across the body of a girl with puncture marks in her neck. Someone is recreating New Orleans’ most brutal supernatural killings and Mina’s sister is the main suspect.
Reasons you might like it:
- A teenage girl moves to a new place and is thrown into a world of vampires and mysteries
- The main character eventually learns about vampire slayers (book 2 – Mina and the Slayers!)
- The main character ends up falling for a vampire
- It’s written by a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan!
Now onto Buffy’s (best) love interest, Angel!
If you love Angel then I’m assuming then you like a good but morally grey vampire love interest and I think you should read The Vampire Diaries series by L.J. Smith
The Vampire Diaries follows the popular and beautiful Elena Gilbert as she returns to school after the horrific death of her parents. Elena is used to getting whatever she wants but the new guy at school, Stefan Salvatore, is brooding and mysterious and wants nothing to do with her.
Reasons you might like it:
- Vampire love interest
- Brooding, self-sacrifical vampire
- 90s vampire fun!
Next up, Buffy’s frenemy Cordelia Chase!
If you like Cordelia Chase then I’m assuming you like characters that can give a little bit of mean girl energy but are, ultimately, always on the right side and I think you should read It Happened One Summer by Tessa Bailey.
It Happened One Summer follows the wealthy and spoiler Piper as she’s forced to move to a small town by her parents after she’s arrested. Soon after she arrives she meets her polar opposite – a handsome but gruff fisherman.
Reasons you might like it:
- Fun, upbeat but spoiler main character
- Main character that develops and becomes better as the story goes on
- Not-so-typical love interests
Now onto a divisive character, Dawn Summers
If you like Dawn I’m assuming you like mysterious stories about odd sisters and I think you should read House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland.
House of Hollow follows 3 sisters who mysteriously disappear as children and return a month later completely unharmed except for a half-moon scar at the base of their throats. Years later, the sisters know that they’re considered weird and when the eldest disappears again, her sisters are forced to attempt to figure out what happened to them as children in order to find her.
Reasons you might like it:
- Strong sisterly bonds
- Mysterious storylines
- A story that gets darker as it goes on
Lets get to a fan favourite, Faith Lehane
If you like Faith then you probably like morally grey female main characters and I’d recommend that you try Boy Parts by Eliza Clark.
Boy Parts follows Irina as she obsessively takes explicit photographs of average-looking men she scouts on the streets of Newcastle. We follow Irina has she descends into a self-destructive lifestyle.
Reasons you might like it:
- Dark main character
- Odd storylines
- Characters that get worse as the storyline goes on
Now onto Buffy’s Watcher, Rupert Giles
If you’re a fan of Giles then you probably like characters that have a bit of a dark past so I think you should read If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio.
If We Were Villains is about Oliver Marks who has just spent 10 years in prison for a murder he may not have committed. The detective who investigated the case is about to retire but before he does, he needs to know what actually happened all of those years ago so Oliver details everything that happened the year someone died when he and his 7 friends were studying Shakespear at an elite college.
Reasons you might like it:
- Dark Academia
- Characters with a dark past
- Mystery
And finally, Buffy’s best friend, Willow Rosenberg
If you like Willow then I’m assuming you want to read a story about witches so I think you should read Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker.
Mooncakes is a graphic novel that follows Nova, a young witch, as she investigates reports of a white wolf in the woods. She’s surprised to find that the wolf is, in fact, her childhood best friend who is battling a horse demon.
Reasons you might like it:
- Sapphic witch
- Werewolf love interest
I have many more recommendations so expect a part 2 based on more Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters and other TV shows!
