If there’s one thing I love it’s a paranormal romance.
I started reading vampire romance books when I was a teenager and it kind of became my entire personality for a very long time so paranormal romances have been something I’ve loved since I was a kid.
Here are 8 of my absolute favourite paranormal book recommendations.
Twilight – Stephenie Meyer
I honestly just don’t think I’d be me if I made a post about paranormal romance book recommendations without mentioning the Twilight series. I’m sure you’ve already got your own feelings about Twilight. It’s been out for so long and it was so popular that it would be hard to not have already formed an opinion on it, but if you’ve managed to get to this point without reading it then I’d recommend giving it a go!
Twilight follows teenage Bella Swan as she moves to the small town of Forks to live with her father where she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen who appears to want nothing to do with her.
Secret Vampire – L.J. Smith
I’m sure you’ve heard of The Vampire Diaries and Secret Vampire is written by the same author. It’s the first book in the Night World series and it was written in the 90s so you definitely have to keep that in mind when you read it. It feels like it was written in the 90s but that isn’t a bad thing!
It follows Poppy who has been best friends with James for her entire life and she’s been in love with him for just as long. And, when Poppy is diagnosed with terminal cancer, James reveals that he is actually a vampire and offers Poppy eternal life.
He introduces Poppy to a world she never knew existed… except that it’s completely illegal for her to know about it.
Dead Until Dark – Charlaine Harris
I’m sure you’ve heard of the very popular TV show True Blood, but did you know that it’s based on a book series? And, the book series is actually good!
But, if you haven’t actually ever heard of the show or you’re not entirely sure what the show or the books are about then I’m here to help!
The Southern Vampire Mysteries are set in a world where vampires have ‘come out’ after synthetic blood was invented which means that vampires can now live normal lives without having to drink the blood of humans.
Sookie Stackhouse is a cocktail waitress in small town Louisiana who can read minds. She dreams of the day a vampire will walk into her bar, and then one day… Bill walks in. He’s tall, dark and handsome, and he’s the only person that Sookie has ever met with a quiet mind.
Hush, Hush – Becca Fitzpatrick
Hush, Hush was one of the first ‘bad boy’ romance books I ever read and I feel like it changed my brain chemistry. It was one of the books I read during my ‘fallen angel’ obsession.
It follows Nora who has never really been much interested in the boys at school … until Patch comes along. He’s dangerous and seems to be everywhere and against Nora’s better judgement, he managers to draw her in.
But as she attempts to find out more about him, she finds herself drawn into an ancient battle between good and evil.
If I Have to Be Haunted – Miranda Sun
If I Have to Be Haunted follows Cara who does her best to ignore the ghosts she’s been able to see for her entire life. But one day she stumbles across the body of her school rival and accidentally speaks to his ghost.
He’s been killed by a magical snake and they consult Cara’s ghost-grandma who tells them that they can bring him back to life if they find the cure within a week. So they head off on a magical quest through a dangerous liminal world of magic and monsters to save him.
This is a classic adventure story that very much gives the vibes of a Percy Jackson-style adventure. It’s a super fun rivals to lovers young adult book. I loved it!
Hex and the City – Kate Johnson
Poppy is a witch with magical hair that lives next to Highgate Cemetary and works at a magic shop in Covent Garden. One day she accidentallty (and very drunkenly) curses a pendant at the shop and sells it to gorgeous celebrity magician, Axl Storm.
Poppy now needs to find Axl and stop the curse before all hell breaks loose.
I was surprised by how much I loved this book. The thing I love about Hex and the City is that it’s kind of a celebrity romance, it’s kind of a paranormal romance, and it’s also just really, really fun.
My Roommate is a Vampire – Jenna Levine
My Roommate is a Vampire is about Cassie who is on the brink of eviction when she finds an amazing apartment at a price that looks too good to be true. She moves in with a slightly odd roommate called Frederick. He sleeps all day, stays out all night, he has a secret room that Cassie isn’t allowed in, and he talks like he’s straight out of a regency romance novel.
And, then one day she opens the fridge only to find bags of blood.
This book is a perfect mix of silly fun and incredible romance. Like, don’t go into this book expecting a masterpiece but it’s one of the most fun books I’ve read over the past year. It’s also a fun little twist on a roommate romance!
The Ex Hex – Erin Sterling
I enjoyed this one a little more than most probably do because the author made the male main character and his family Welsh and I am Welsh. I love when authors incorporate Wales into stories because it almost nnever happens. Obviously, as long as it isn’t offensive because that does happen sometimes when Americans write about cultures they don’t really know.
The Ex Hex follows Viv, a witch who curses her ex-boyfriend when he breaks up with her. Nothing happens but when he returns to town 10 years later, he returns to town and the curse activates.
So, they’re forced to work together to fix it before everything goes wrong.
